Parents
Hello Husky Crew parents!! Whether you’ve been following the Husky crew for a while or are new to Husky rowing, you may have some questions. Do you know the best places to gather at races to cheer on the Huskies, where to eat, where to stay? Are you interested in volunteering to set up tents and spectator food at out of town races? Do you want to get involved in some other way?
I’m here to help. My name is Sally Struzyna and I’m the parent contact and coordinator for the 2009-2010 season. My husband Dieter and I have two husky rowers; a son who is a junior and a daughter who is a freshman. If I can answer any questions or help in any other way, please email me at sallystruzyna@msn.com. Likewise, if you are able to help with tents or spectator food (particularly if you live near or will be traveling to Redwood Shores, California; Lake Natoma/Rancho Cordova, California; Cooper River/ Cherry Hill, New Jersey), I’d love to hear from you. Volunteering is a great way to get to know other parents and alums and become part of the Husky experience.
Looking forward to a fantastic season!
Sally

Parents - break out your clubs!
The 2009 Golf Classic has now become the single largest fundraising event for the UW Men’s Crew Team. Last year the tournament organizers were able to give Coach Callahan and Coach Ernst a check for $15,000. In only three short years, the tournament has raised almost $30,000 for the Crew Team.

IRA Update from Sam and Rosy Darby (Michelle Darby, 2011, coxswain V8)
The team arrived in New Jersey and will be rowing at Princeton until Wednesday morning when they will transfer to the Crown Plaza by the race course.
The Husky parent hospitality tent will be assembled on Thursday. It is supposed to be ready by midday.
To view the race venue, go here: Cooper River Park, NJ - Google Maps. The large building with the swimming pool is the Crown Plaza Hotel. The patch of grass with the fingers sticking out into the river is the trailer area where the team will rig and launch the racing shells. The text “Cooper River Rowing Association” indicates where the finish line will be. If you follow that shore line to the left, you will see a line of trees.
The enclosure and tents will be along the shore at the end of the trees. On Thursday you may be able to drive both ways and park along Park Blvd but on Friday and Saturday it will be one way (right to left) and you will have to drive further up on Marlton Pike, turn left and come back down Park Blvd.
The hospitality tent menu is posted at 2010 Washington IRA Tent/Food Information. Please email Sam Darby at sdarby@ieee.org if you have any questions or want to contribute to the food.
Here is a link to the race schedule: Preliminary 2010 IRA Schedule.pdf
Tom Gibbs will be making a big sign for us to hang on the front of the tent but please bring any husky “bling” you might have to decorate the tent.
This should be a very exciting and fun Championship. Looking forward to yelling GO DAWGS!! by the river.

Calling all Husky fans to the 2010 NCAA Rowing Championships!
We are headed once again to Lake Natoma to cheer on our women as they row for the Division 1 Championship. Time is flying by and in an attempt to organize the food and hospitality tent provisions; I have a proposed plan to follow. It is a bit challenging to carry out three days of food prep at a location far from the home kitchen sink and freezer but here goes….
On Friday the Husky women race from 8:45am until 10:45am and then will head off to their hotel to rest and stay cool. They return for three races from 3:30 -4pm. I propose we have breakfast fare and then set up for a light lunch.
On Saturday we have only morning races from 9:45am until 10:15am and then the rest of the day is devoted to Division II and III racing. On this day I think we should just offer breakfast food and snacks.
On Sunday let’s do it up BIG! The women begin racing at 9:45 and finish with the Division I award ceremony at 12:30. On that day we can do breakfast foods and lunch. Jim and Barb Carlson, Husky fans and parents of Peter, have offered their bbq and so we will have hot food. Below I have sketched out menus for each day with a list of what is still needed. If you can bring any of the items, shoot me an email and confirm. We always need ice chests filled with ice. Feel free to add anything to the list you wish – this is just an attempt to get us organized! My cell phone number is included if you want to chat, otherwise email is fine!
FRIDAY
Brkfst: granola (toppings), muffins, bagels, fruit, hard boiled egg, coffee
Lunch: Caesar salad, pasta salad, sandwiches, brownies, cookies, fruit
ITEMS NEEDED ON FRIDAY
Bagels (4dozen), cream cheese, coffee (decaf and reg) in pouring boxes – maybe two each?) cookies, Gatorade, bottled water, 2 easy pour mayo bottles, soda pop, sports bars (Cliff bars, etc)
SATURDAY
Brkfst: granola, croissant (jam left over from Pac10), donuts, fruit, bagels, coffee (same as above)
ITEMS NEEDED FOR SATURDAY
Croissant (3 dozen), coffee, melons –all types, donuts
SUNDAY
Brkfst: same as Friday
Lunch: BBQ tri tip and chicken, pasta salad, Caesar salad, rolls (dinner type that could be used to make sandwiches?), fruit, cookies and brownies
ITEMS NEEDED ON SUNDAY
Bagels, bananas, coffee, rolls (maybe 4 dozen?), cookies and brownies, water
We can take stock of turnout, weather (cool temps upper 60s to 70s are forecasted) and over stock as the weekend progresses. Costco and Trader Joes are nearby.
Let me know if you can supply any of these items.
Thanks and GO HUSKY WOMEN!!!

Thanks to all parents who helped at Pac-10s!
Particular thanks to the Ottos, Bells, Brownings, Mannistos, Moores, Didiers, Munns, Macks, Tafts and Miyauchis for spearheading the menus, food, supplies and BBQ. Our hospitality tent was a huge success and contributed to the enjoyment of all. Everyone enjoyed our Husky spirit and of course the fabulous food.
See you all at NCAAs this coming weekend and IRAS the first weekend in June. Check the Crew parent’s site on huskycrew.org for details on our hospitality tents and what you can bring.

It costs approximately $1500 to host our hospitality tents and this year we implemented a system to eliminate the need for individuals to incur these expenses. If we all do
our part, we can continue this important Husky Crew tradition.

3/24/10: Dear Husky Crew Parent:
Now that racing season has started it’s time to participate in one of the great Husky Crew traditions - parents of current crew men and women host hospitality tents at the out of town races. The purpose is to provide a place where friends, family and alumnae gather to socialize, enjoy some great food and cheer on the Huskies. It also provides a meeting place for rowers to rendezvous with family members and supporters following their races. (The rowing Stewards organize hospitality events for all home races.) Hanging out at the hospitality tent is a blast!
In the past a few parents have paid for tent rentals and food and attempted to recoup their expenses by placing a donation jar in the tent. This year we want to implement a system that will eliminate the need for individuals to incur these expenses.
We’re asking all crew parents to contribute to the Husky Crew Parents (HCP) fund. The money will be used to rent tents and purchase food, decorations and miscellaneous items. The rowing Stewards have allowed us to establish an HCP checking account under their account and tax ID number, which saves us fees and makes it easy to pass on to new parent administrators each year. Holly Zapel (Matt Zapel, junior, class of 2011) has volunteered to administer the HCP account for the 2010 season.
So here’s what you can do:
1. Contribute $50 (or more) to fund the Husky Crew Parents account for the 2010 season.
Mail check to: Husky Crew Parents
PO Box 722
Vashon Island, WA 98070
2.
At each venue we
need parents to coordinate tent acquisition and set up, create a menu for
potluck items, decorate the tent area, help with shopping, and arrange and
replenish food items.
Venues:
a. Stanford Dual, Redwood Shores, Belmont CA; April 3 (V8, JV8, 1F - men)
b. Stanford Women’s Pac-10
Challenge, Redwood Shores, Belmont CA; April 3-4 ( V8, JV8, 1F - women)
c. Cal Dual, Redwood Shores, Belmont CA; April 24 (V8, JV8, 1F - men and
women, V4+ - women)
d. Pac-10 Championships, Lake Natoma, Rancho Cordova CA; May 16 (V8,
JV8, 1F, V4 - men and women)
e. NCAA Championships, Lake Natoma, Rancho Cordova CA; May 28-29 (V8, JV8, V4
- women)
f. IRA Championships, Cooper River, Camden NJ; June 3-5 (V8, JV8, 1F, V4 -

If you would like to help out and either live near one of these venues or are traveling to cheer on the Huskies, please contact me at sallystruzyna@msn.com or 206.550.6522.
We will have more information as the season progresses on this webpage, including helpful tips, venue directions, hotels, hospitality tent locations, potluck menus and information about post-race socializing.
Looking forward to seeing you at the races and cheering on our Huskies. Go purple, be gold, and get involved!

All rowers, including freshman men and women, are expected to dress up for the VBC banquet and when they travel to races.

10/30/09: ATTENTION ALL PARENTS: A great opportunity to watch your rowers in their last races of the fall season!
Washington rowing is set to compete Sunday, November 8, as both the men and women take to the water in the 28th Head of the Lake Regatta, hosted by the University of Washington and Lake Washington Rowing Club. Along with the Husky men’s and women’s crew, this regional event will feature thousands of rowers from all levels of competition. The 3-mile head race begins at 8 a.m. and ends with an awards ceremony at Conibear Shellhouse.
The race starts on Lake Union, continues east through the Montlake Cut to Lake Washington and finishes near the Conibear Shellhouse. A shortened course is planned if inclement weather dictates.
VIEWING
The race can be viewed from the shore along most of its length. Best viewing spots close to Conibear are:
| Along the Montlake cut | |
| University and Montlake bridges |
It can be cold and wet this time of year, so come prepared. Following the race, join the Washington coaches, rowers, alums and friends at the awards ceremony at Conibear Shellhouse.
PARKING
There are numerous parking lots surrounding Conibear Shell House. Spectators may use lots E-1, E-12 and E-11. Do not park in the lot directly next to Conibear as this will be reserved for boat rigging only (Lot E-8).
